CRIME IN SHEFFIELD: 2024 VS 2025

Crime in Sheffield showed an overall reduction across the selected recorded crime categories we analysed between 2024 and 2025.

The purpose of this crime snapshot is to increase awareness of selected recorded crime trends in Sheffield and provide a simple year-on-year comparison using Police.uk data.

It is not intended to provide a complete picture of all crime in the area. Instead, it focuses on four categories that may be particularly relevant to residents, property owners and businesses: burglary, other theft, vehicle crime, and criminal damage and arson.

The figures include all recorded offences within these categories across Sheffield. They are not limited to residential or commercial properties.

Crime in Sheffield: key figures

Crime category20242025Numerical changeChange
Burglary4,2192,896-1,323-31.4%
Other theft3,8633,319-544-14.1%

Criminal damage and arson5,3315,109-222-4.2%
Selected categories total18,09515,569-2,526-14.0%

Across the four selected crime categories, the overall number of recorded offences decreased.

There were 18,095 recorded offences in 2024 compared with 15,569 in 2025.

That represents 2,526 fewer recorded offences, an overall reduction of approximately 14.0%.

All four of the selected categories recorded fewer offences in 2025 than in 2024, although the size of the reductions varied considerably.

What does that look like across the year?

In 2024, the selected categories accounted for:

18,095 recorded offences across the year
Approximately 1,508 per month
Approximately 49.4 per day

In 2025, there were:

15,569 recorded offences across the year
Approximately 1,297 per month
Approximately 42.7 per day

These monthly and daily figures are averages across the full year. They do not mean offences occurred evenly from one day or month to another.

What increased?

None of the four selected crime categories recorded an increase in 2025.

Burglary, other theft, vehicle crime, and criminal damage and arson all recorded lower annual totals than in 2024.

This is important when interpreting the figures, as the data does not support a conclusion that the selected crime trends in Sheffield worsened overall during 2025.

What decreased?

The largest percentage reduction was recorded in burglary.

There were 4,219 recorded burglaries in 2024 compared with 2,896 in 2025.

That represents 1,323 fewer offences, a reduction of 31.4%.

Other theft also fell.

Recorded other theft offences decreased from 3,863 in 2024 to 3,319 in 2025, representing 544 fewer offences, or a reduction of 14.1%.

Vehicle crime fell from 4,682 offences in 2024 to 4,245 in 2025.

That represents 437 fewer recorded offences, a reduction of 9.3%.

Criminal damage and arson recorded the smallest percentage reduction. The total fell from 5,331 offences in 2024 to 5,109 in 2025, representing 222 fewer offences, or a reduction of 4.2%.

Police.uk combines criminal damage and arson within one category in the data used for this snapshot. This means separate totals for vandalism, criminal damage and arson cannot be calculated from these figures.

The overall picture is therefore one of lower recorded totals across all four selected categories in 2025.

What could this mean for residents and businesses?

The figures do not show whether individual offences involved private homes, shops, offices, warehouses, construction sites or other types of premises.

They can, however, provide useful local context.

All four selected categories decreased in Sheffield during 2025, which should be recognised rather than presenting the figures as evidence of increasing crime.

At the same time, 2,896 burglaries, 4,245 vehicle crime offences and 5,109 criminal damage and arson offences were still recorded across Sheffield during the year.

For businesses responsible for premises, vehicles or physical assets, figures such as these may still be worth considering when reviewing access arrangements, out-of-hours security and the protection of exposed property.

There may also be relevance for some residential properties.

Owners of larger homes, private estates or rural properties may have more than the main building to consider, including entrances, driveways, vehicles, garages, outbuildings and wider grounds.

The statistics do not tell us how many offences affected these types of properties and should not be interpreted as evidence that larger homes or estates are specifically being targeted.

About the crime in Sheffield data

This snapshot is based on Police.uk street-level recorded crime data covering January to December 2024 and January to December 2025.

The same crime categories and geographic approach have been used for both years to provide a like-for-like comparison.

Police.uk publishes crime locations in an anonymised form, so individual map points should not be treated as exact incident addresses.

The figures should therefore be viewed as a local crime snapshot rather than a record of offences affecting specific homes, businesses or individual properties.
