Crime in Rotherham borough fell across all four of the recorded crime categories examined in this snapshot between 2024 and 2025.
The purpose of this snapshot is to increase awareness of local crime trends through a simple comparison of Police.uk data. It focuses on burglary, other theft, vehicle crime, and criminal damage and arson. It is not a complete picture of all crime in Rotherham.
The figures cover recorded offences across Rotherham borough. They are not limited to residential or commercial properties.

What Does That Look Like Across the Year?
In 2024, the selected categories accounted for 7,447 recorded offences. That is an average of approximately 621 per month and 20 per day.
In 2025, the total fell to 6,457 recorded offences, an average of approximately 538 per month and 18 per day.
These are averages across each full year. They do not mean the same number of offences occurred every day or month.
What Increased?
None of the four selected crime categories increased between 2024 and 2025.
Shoplifting, which is not included in the four category total, rose from 1,881 recorded incidents in 2024 to 2,211 in 2025. That is an increase of 330 incidents, or 17.5%. It provides additional context for retailers without changing the basis of the main comparison.
What Decreased?
Burglary recorded the largest fall, dropping from 1,521 offences in 2024 to 1,159 in 2025. That is 362 fewer offences, a reduction of 23.8%.
Criminal damage and arson fell by 236 offences, or 10.0%. Other theft fell by 223, or 12.7%, while vehicle crime fell by 169, or 9.4%.
The reduction was therefore spread across all four categories rather than driven by a single type of offence.
What Could This Mean for Residents and Businesses?
The fall across the four selected categories is a positive change in the recorded figures. However, burglaries, thefts, vehicle crime and damage were still recorded across the borough in 2025. Shoplifting also rose.
For residents and businesses, these figures provide local context when reviewing property access, vehicles, stored assets and premises left unattended outside working hours.
The figures do not show whether particular types of homes, shops, warehouses or construction sites were targeted. They should not be used to judge the risk at an individual property without considering its location and circumstances.
About the Crime in Rotherham Data
This snapshot uses Police.uk open crime data covering January to December 2024 and January to December 2025. The same four crime categories and the same geographic method were used for both years.
Records were selected where the published Lower Layer Super Output Area name begins with Rotherham. This covers Rotherham borough, not solely Rotherham town centre. Shoplifting is discussed separately and is not included in the table total or daily averages.
Police.uk publishes approximate, anonymised street locations, so individual map points should not be treated as exact incident addresses. More information is available in the Police.uk street level crime methodology.
