Crime in Birmingham showed an overall reduction across the selected recorded crime categories we analysed between 2024 and 2025.
The purpose of this crime snapshot is to increase awareness of selected recorded crime trends in Birmingham and provide a simple year-on-year comparison using Police.uk data.
It is not intended to provide a complete picture of all crime in the area. Instead, it focuses on four categories that may be particularly relevant to residents, property owners and businesses: burglary, other theft, vehicle crime, and criminal damage and arson.
The figures include all recorded offences within these categories across Birmingham. They are not limited to residential or commercial properties.
Crime in Birmingham: Key Figures
| Crime category | 2024 | 2025 | Numerical change | Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Burglary | 7,916 | 6,789 | -1,127 | -14.2% |
| Other theft | 10,364 | 8,625 | -1,739 | -16.8% |
| Vehicle crime | 13,279 | 11,851 | -1,428 | -10.8% |
| Criminal damage and arson | 11,020 | 10,700 | -320 | -2.9% |
| Selected categories total | 42,579 | 37,965 | -4,614 | -10.8% |
Across the four selected crime categories, the overall number of recorded offences decreased.
There were 42,579 recorded offences in 2024 compared with 37,965 in 2025.
That represents 4,614 fewer recorded offences, an overall reduction of approximately 10.8%.
All four of the selected categories recorded fewer offences in 2025 than in 2024, although the size of the reductions varied considerably.
What Does That Look Like Across the Year?
In 2024, the selected categories accounted for:
42,579 recorded offences across the year
Approximately 3,548 per month
Approximately 116.3 per day
In 2025, there were:
37,965 recorded offences across the year
Approximately 3,164 per month
Approximately 104 per day
These monthly and daily figures are averages across the full year. They do not mean offences occurred evenly from one day or month to another.
What Increased?
None of the four selected crime categories recorded an increase in 2025.
Burglary, other theft, vehicle crime, and criminal damage and arson all recorded lower annual totals than in 2024.
This is important when interpreting the figures, as the data does not support a conclusion that the selected crime trends in Birmingham worsened overall during 2025.
What Decreased?
The largest numerical reduction was recorded in other theft.
There were 10,364 recorded other theft offences in 2024 compared with 8,625 in 2025.
That represents 1,739 fewer offences, a reduction of 16.8%.
Burglary also recorded a substantial fall.
There were 7,916 recorded burglaries in 2024 and 6,789 in 2025.
That represents 1,127 fewer offences, a reduction of 14.2%.
Vehicle crime fell from 13,279 offences in 2024 to 11,851 in 2025, representing 1,428 fewer recorded offences, or a reduction of 10.8%.
Criminal damage and arson recorded the smallest percentage reduction. The total fell from 11,020 offences in 2024 to 10,700 in 2025, a reduction of 320 offences, or 2.9%.
Police.uk combines criminal damage and arson within one category in the data used for this snapshot. This means separate totals for vandalism, criminal damage and arson cannot be calculated from these figures.
The overall picture is therefore one of lower recorded totals across all four selected categories in 2025.
What Could This Mean for Residents and Businesses?
The figures do not show whether individual offences involved private homes, shops, offices, warehouses, construction sites or other types of premises.
They can, however, provide useful local context.
All four selected categories decreased in Birmingham during 2025, which should be recognised rather than presenting the figures as evidence of increasing crime.
At the same time, 6,789 burglaries, 11,851 vehicle crime offences and 10,700 criminal damage and arson offences were still recorded across Birmingham during the year.
For businesses responsible for premises, vehicles or physical assets, figures such as these may still be worth considering when reviewing access arrangements, out-of-hours security and the protection of exposed property.
There may also be relevance for some residential properties.
Owners of larger homes, private estates or rural properties may have more than the main building to consider, including entrances, driveways, vehicles, garages, outbuildings and wider grounds.
The statistics do not tell us how many offences affected these types of properties and should not be interpreted as evidence that larger homes or estates are specifically being targeted.
For properties where an additional on-site security presence is being considered, Colosseum K9 also provides private residential security.
About the Crime in Birmingham Data
This snapshot is based on Police.uk street-level recorded crime data covering January to December 2024 and January to December 2025.
The same crime categories and geographic approach have been used for both years to provide a like-for-like comparison.
Police.uk publishes crime locations in an anonymised form, so individual map points should not be treated as exact incident addresses.
The figures should therefore be viewed as a local crime snapshot rather than a record of offences affecting specific homes, businesses or individual properties.
